IS THERE STILL LIFE?

2018

Press Release for SOHO20 gallery:

In this series the process of removing and altering the surface's grid remains critical, but here Fischetti also adds layers of plant material: stems, pods, and portions of leaves exist alongside empty planes.

Fischetti explains these dual gestures of reduction and layering as a consideration of our present ecological uncertainty, heightened by political events of the last two years. Likewise the addition of plant material is a reference to both the longstanding practice of pressing petals, and still life portraiture. Each reference is an effort to retain nature in its present form, while being juxtaposed against the fragmentation and deconstruction of the composition. “In a way it’s an attempt to find hope in a situation that feels desperate; while time passes in an uncertain future, there’s still the potential of growth,” she notes.
